Flight delays at Delhi Airport today: Wind shifts prompt travel advisory

Send Push
On April 18, 2025, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) issued an official advisory alerting passengers to the possibility of flight delays due to shifting wind patterns around the airport. The advisory, shared via IGI Airport's social media platforms, announced that Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) measures would be in effect for inbound flights from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM IST. These temporary measures are aligned with international aviation safety standards and are implemented to ensure smooth and safe aircraft operations during challenging weather conditions.

While flight arrivals may be affected, Delhi Airport authorities clarified that other airport operations—including departures, terminal services, and activities across the airport’s three runways—would remain unaffected. Travelers were strongly encouraged to contact their respective airlines to get the latest updates on flight status and any possible rescheduling.

The advisory follows forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has predicted significant wind activity in Delhi throughout the day. According to the IMD, the national capital is expected to experience gusty winds that could disrupt normal flight operations. Moreover, Delhi residents are advised to brace for worsening weather conditions over the next two days. April 19 may see a thunderstorm, lightning, and strong surface winds, accompanied by light rainfall. These weather conditions are expected to extend into April 20, with strong winds likely to persist through the day.

In light of these weather-related challenges, a parliamentary standing committee recently voiced concern about the increasing delays at IGI Airport. Reports state that the ongoing closure of Runway 28 has increased airport operations' workload, causing a domino effect of delays in Delhi and across the country. According to reports, delays have totalled more than 320 hours nationwide.

Given these circumstances, airport officials reiterated the importance of staying informed. Passengers are urged to check their flight status regularly, remain in touch with their airlines, and allow extra time for travel to the airport. Authorities also expressed their regret for any inconvenience caused and thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation.

This weather update is a timely reminder that the skies can be unpredictable — and so can your flight status. Travellers are best off staying alert, planning ahead, and checking for real-time updates to dodge any last-minute surprises.
