Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray on Thursday held a meeting with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, triggering fresh speculations about his next move.
The meeting assumes significance as Thackeray has indicated that he would not be averse to having a tie-up with cousin Uddhav Thackeray's Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena (UBT). The UBT has claimed that talks were underway with the MNS on a tie-up for the upcoming Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Kalyan Dombivli civic polls.
The Raj Thackeray-Fadnavis meeting comes also just a day after the UBT and MNS, which contested in the BEST Cooperative Credit Society elections in an alliance, failed to win a single seat.
The meeting at the chief minister's official residence, Varsha, lasted 45 minutes. The MNS chief later told journalists that the meeting was not political but was over town planning and traffic issues.
"I have been speaking to the chief minister on important issues. There is a discussion on the planning of the cities... The day before yesterday there was 400 inches of rainfall and the city fell apart, the roads are quite narrow, people have been parking cars everywhere, there is no discipline," Thackeray said, adding: "We need to get the situation under control now or else it would go out of hand. However, no one is paying attention to the basic things.
Thackeray said the Mumbai police commissioner and joint commissioner were present during his meeting with the CM.
"I have given them suggestions that could be implemented on having parking below vacant grounds as well as strict rules for parking and no parking. The chief minister said these would be implemented," he said.
While the UBT has been claiming that the MNS is going to have an alliance with it for the civic polls, the MNS has been conspicuously silent on the issue. Raj Thackeray has prevented his party leaders from speaking on the issue.
