The Supreme Court on Friday directed former Haryana Congress MLA Dharam Singh Chhoker to surrender back to jail on Saturday. Chhoker was booked and arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for his alleged involvement in a ₹1,500 crore money laundering case.
A bench headed by justice Rajesh Bindal refused to entertain Chhoker's appeal against an order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court which had granted him interim medical bail and asked him to surrender on July 12. Chhoker approached the apex court seeking extension of time to surrender.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had granted Chhoker interim bail on medical grounds on June 19, allowing him to undergo surgery at a hospital of his choice. The HC while granting bail had said that the bail was a "one-time measure" and had directed Chhoker to surrender before jail authorities by 5 pm on Saturday.
The refusal to extend the surrender was challenged by Chhoker. SC, however, refused to extend the medical bail. The bench verbally observed that a misstatement was made before the bench at a previous hearing with regard to Chhoker's hospitalisation and discharge. The petition was eventually dismissed as withdrawn.
