South Africa clinched a thrilling victory over India in the second T20I of the four-match series on Sunday. The hosts won by three wickets and six balls to spare to level the series 1-1 at Gqeberha.
Put in to bat, India managed to score 124/6 in 20 overs. The visitors got off to a poor start and lost three wickets inside the powerplay and were reduced to 45/4 in the eighth over and further slumped to 70/5 in the 12th over. Hardik Pandya struggled his way to an unbeaten 39 runs off 45 balls, to get India to a respectable total. Axar Patel 27 off 21 balls before being run out. It was a collective bowling effort for South Africa as five bowlers picked a wicket each.
Varun Chakravarthy fifer
Chasing the target, South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals as mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy bagged a five-wicket haul for India. The hosts were staring at a defeat when they were reduced to 86/7 in the 16th over. However, Tristan Stubbs showed composure and maturity under pressure and scored 47 not out off 41 balls, including seven fours. Gerald Coetzee hit a few handy blows down the order and finished 19 not out off nine balls. The duo saw South Africa home by taking on the pacers Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan in the last three overs.
Chakravarthy's 5/17 is now the best figures for a full member nation that has ended in a defeat in T20Is. The loss also ended team India's 11-match winning streak in the shortest format.
The next match will be played at Centurion on November 13.
