Family's worst fears come true: Teen kills brother and pregnant sister-in-law in Gujarat village

A horrifying case that has shocked residents of Junagadh district has surfaced from a remote village, around 50km from the city, where a 15-year-old boy allegedly killed his elder brother and six-months-pregnant sister-in-law in an act of rage and cruelty. The gruesome double murder, committed on October 16, was unearthed nearly two weeks later when police exhumed the couple’s bodies after the woman’s family in Bihar raised suspicions.

According to police, the teenager attacked his brother with an iron pipe following a heated argument and later killed his sister-in-law. His mother allegedly helped him bury both bodies in a pit behind their house to conceal the crime.

A senior police official told TOI, “The boy admitted to first striking his brother repeatedly with an iron pipe on the head in their house until he collapsed. When his sister-in-law saw his fury and pleaded for mercy, the boy demanded to have sex with her. After he raped the woman, he got scared that she might scream. He thrust his knee on her abdomen and throttled her.”

The official added that the boy attempted to destroy evidence soon after the killings. “He dug a five-foot-deep pit and buried the bodies. He then set ablaze their clothes and cleaned the bloodstains. His mother was also present in the house when the crime unfolded,” the official told TOI.

Police said the bodies were nude when recovered, and the man’s skull was found fractured. The attack caused the half-grown fetus to come out of the womb, as confirmed by the postmortem report.

Family’s suspicion led to the discovery
The case came to light after the woman’s family, who live in Bihar’s Khagaria district, were unable to contact her during Diwali. When repeated calls to her husband went unanswered, they dialled the younger brother’s number. The boy’s mother reportedly told them that the couple had died in a road accident near Himatnagar in north Gujarat.

However, when the family demanded photographs or official confirmation, she evaded their questions. Growing suspicious, they travelled from Bihar to Gujarat and approached Visavadar police. Investigations revealed that no such accident or deaths had been recorded in Himatnagar’s jurisdiction.

Police then questioned the boy and his mother, during which he eventually confessed to the killings and revealed where he had buried the bodies. The couple’s remains were exhumed from behind the house in the presence of forensic experts and local authorities.

Mother assisted in destroying evidence
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rohitkumar told TOI, “Call detail records showed that the boy’s mother was not near the crime spot on that day. Her involvement in the murders was not established, but she assisted her son in destroying evidence. We believe it would not have been possible for one person alone to dig a pit and bury the bodies.”

Boy showed no remorse
Police officials said the minor displayed a disturbingly calm and unremorseful demeanour despite the brutality of his actions. During interrogation, he spoke matter-of-factly and made no attempt to hide details of the killings.

Investigators believe the boy harboured deep resentment toward his elder brother, who frequently scolded him and often took away money he earned from managing a cattle shed. “He seemed to have been nursing a sense of hatred and anger toward his brother for a long time,” an officer told TOI.

Authorities are awaiting medical evidence to verify his claim of sexually assaulting the woman before killing her. The investigation is also exploring whether the minor himself had faced abuse or trauma that could have triggered the violent outburst.

Family background and migration
Police said the family had migrated from Bihar nearly 40 years ago. The father, who died during the Covid-19 pandemic, worked as a priest at a temple on the village outskirts. Both sons were born and raised in Gujarat. The elder brother worked as an electrician, while the accused helped manage stray cattle.

The case has left the local community shaken by the brutality and the alleged involvement of a minor. Police have sent the boy to a juvenile home, while his mother has been arrested for aiding in the destruction of evidence.
