Former Indian cricketer revealed that Indian veteran Rohit Sharma deserved a grander farewell for the significant amount of time he dedicated to the Indian team over the years. The right-hander announced his retirement from the Indian Test team via social media on Wednesday.
The top-order batter will not receive a proper farewell for his long 11-year career with the Indian Test unit. The Bengal-born cricketer admitted that it would have been better for everyone if the batter had retired on the field.
"If Rohit Sharma had retired not on social media but on the field after playing, it would have been a more fitting send-off. It would've felt better for all of us too," Tiwary was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Several players, like Tim Southee and James Anderson, received proper farewells in recent years, but the Nagpur-born batter will not have the same fortune. The 39-year-old criticised the Indian team management for not giving a proper farewell to the Indian legend.
“Just look at his record as a Test captain, it's very good. He's won 12 Tests, lost 9, and drawn 3. So there's no doubt about his success rate — it's solid," he added.
Every player wanted to play under him: TiwaryThe right-handed batter had a memorable farewell in the T20I format, where he announced his retirement after clinching the T20 World Cup 2024. The former cricketer also pointed out that the Mumbai Indians (MI) player had tremendous leadership qualities and noted that this was a significant reason why he deserved a better send-off.
"He was a very popular leader among this group of boys. If you see, even the young players wanted to play under him. We always hear them say in their interviews, 'I really enjoyed playing under Rohit Sharma's captaincy,'” he concluded.
Following the Indian batter's retirement, the management is now looking for a new captain to fill his shoes ahead of the new WTC cycle, which begins on 20 June at Headingley.
