'We can take inspiration from RCB': Daniel Vettori on SRH's comeback hopes in IPL 2025

Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori admitted that the team is in a tough spot this season but believes they can still bounce back, just like Royal Challengers Bangalore did in IPL 2024.

SRH have won only two of their eight games so far and are in desperate need of a turnaround, with six matches remaining in the league stage.

“IPL’s been going a long time and there’s been a lot of teams who’ve found themselves in this situation. And there’s been a few teams that have been able to resurrect their seasons—you look back to RCB last year after a difficult start. So if we can take some inspiration from a team like them... Ultimately, it’s gonna take one performance,” Vettori said after SRH’s recent loss.

In IPL 2024, RCB had won just one game out of their first eight, but then won six in a row to qualify for the playoffs. SRH will hope to do the same, starting with their upcoming match against Chennai Super Kings on April 25.

“We’re not playing well in all three areas”: Vettori admits lack of team performance

Vettori was honest about SRH’s overall performance, saying the team has struggled to come together in all departments.

“We just haven’t been able to put a collective performance together, bar the two games that we’ve won. We’re gonna have to improve dramatically in all three facets,” he said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Vettori also explained how conditions in their last match caught them off guard.

“We wanted to bowl first because the conditions were vastly different... We’ve discussed that it’s a 280, 250 wicket. But once we got through those two overs, the assessment was that it was not the 250-260 wicket like in the last few games," he said.

He pointed out that the early collapse, where the team was 24 for 4 in the powerplay, left them with too much to do.

“When you go in early on, you try to maximise the powerplay. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to, and we kept losing wickets,” he said.

SRH’s opening pair- Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma- have been key in past wins. But Vettori stressed that when they fail, others must step up.

“When they don’t succeed, then it’s the responsibility of the other batsmen… and potentially that’s what we haven’t had this season.”

SRH began their season with a massive win over RR, but since then, the team has managed to win only one game. They currently find themselves in the 9th spot, and the contest against 10th-placed CSK will be a virtual knock-out for either of the teams.
