Amidst the changing work culture in the country, the government has taken a major step for gig workers and freelancers. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has launched the NPS e-Shramik platform, which will now allow workers associated with platforms like Zomato, Uber, Ola, Swiggy, and Urban Company to become part of the National Pension System (NPS). Previously, NPS benefits were only available to government and private employees, but now this facility will be extended to freelancers as well.
Why is this scheme important?
Millions of gig workers in India are unable to access retirement funds like full-time employees. This initiative will provide them with financial security. Under the new system, each worker will have a PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number), into which they can deposit funds as per their convenience. This will provide them with financial stability after retirement and enable them to build a pension fund like traditional employees.
Easy registration and contribution system
Joining NPS e-Shramik is very easy. First, a PRAN number is created by verifying the worker's Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, and mobile number. Next, the name, email address, and nominee information must be entered. Contributions can be made in three ways: by both the company and the worker, by the worker alone, or by the company alone. Some platforms may set a minimum contribution of ₹99 per month, while the standard NPS contribution is ₹500. Fortunately, there is no registration fee for this scheme, and the annual maintenance charge is only ₹15.
A private station was built for ₹113 crore.
A major step towards financial independence.
Experts believe that this initiative will formalize and secure the gig economy in India. This will not only provide future security to freelancers and delivery partners but will also encourage them to save and invest. This scheme will help instill financial discipline in young professionals, providing them with long-term benefits. This government initiative is considered a strong step towards the goals of "Atmanirbhar Bharat" and "Digital India." This scheme could prove to be a boon for those who prefer to work independently, away from traditional jobs. Regular contributions will provide them with a strong means of permanent pension security.
