If you frequently send parcels or documents through the post office, here’s an important update. The Department of Posts has announced a revision of Speed Post charges effective from October 1, 2025. This is the first major hike in 12 years, since October 2012. Alongside the price revision, the postal service is also introducing several new features to improve safety, convenience, and digital integration.
Why Have Charges Been Revised?According to the Ministry of Communications, the operating costs of Speed Post have risen significantly in recent years due to inflation, infrastructure maintenance, and investments in modern technology. With growing demand for digital services, the government says the new rates are designed to keep the service sustainable and efficient while matching current industry standards.
New Features for CustomersThe revamped Speed Post service is not just about higher charges; it also brings additional facilities aimed at boosting security and ease of use:
-
Online Payments: Customers will no longer need to rely on cash at counters. Online payment options will be available directly through apps or web portals.
-
OTP-Based Delivery: Parcels will only be handed over after the recipient shares the correct one-time password (OTP), ensuring greater security and authenticity.
-
SMS Alerts: Senders and recipients will receive real-time SMS updates at every stage of parcel movement.
-
Online Booking: Customers can now book parcels conveniently from home via the official mobile app or website.
-
Real-Time Tracking: Improved tracking will allow users to monitor their parcels instantly and know the estimated delivery time.
-
Registration Services: Regular customers can register online to access faster and more secure booking and delivery facilities.

Concessions for Students and Bulk CustomersIn a bid to encourage usage, India Post has announced discounts:
-
10% concession for students
-
5% concession for new bulk customers
As of September 1, 2025, the Registered Post service has been fully merged with Speed Post. This means there will no longer be a separate registered post option—customers will get all services under the Speed Post umbrella.
Final WordWith the new structure, Speed Post charges are set to rise from October 1, 2025, after remaining unchanged for over a decade. While the higher rates may increase mailing costs, the introduction of OTP-based delivery, digital payments, online booking, and improved tracking promises better convenience, transparency, and safety for users.
For frequent senders, especially students and bulk shippers, the new discounts may help offset some of the added costs. India Post hopes the changes will strengthen customer trust and modernize one of the country’s most widely used postal services.
