Netflix and Amazon Prime houses one of IMDb’s top-rated shows of all time - even though you’ve probably never heard of it.

Journalist Marina Hyde shed some light on the Netflix sleeper hit on the latest episode of her podcast, The Rest is Entertainment.

Speaking with her co-host, BBC quiz master and novelist Richard Osman, Marina dubbed the four-season drama “the biggest show you’ve probably never heard of”.

“It’s pretty hard on IMDb to get a 9.2 rating, if you’re a drama, overall,” Marina explained. “And there are few shows that are on [at least] 9.2, and they are The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Game of Thrones…

“And another show that you’ve probably never heard of,” she continued. “But it’s got 200 million viewers worldwide.

“Season five is in production right now. It’s even had theatrical releases episode by episode in theatres, and it has pulled in 63 million for the last one of those.

“It’s got it’s own dedicated fan convention every year, it’s got very high production values, it’s character-driven, people binge it,” she went on, before revealing: “It’s called The Chosen, and it is about the life of Jesus Christ.”

“Based on the book,” Richard chimed in cheekily, referencing the Bible, with Marina confirming that it was indeed based on “part of the book”.

The Chosen, which began in 2017, is a Christian drama spanning four seasons, with another season currently in production.

The series’ Netflix synopsis reads: “With his teachings and miracles, Jesus of Nazareth attracts students and followers from all walks of life. But the Roman authorities grow uneasy.”

The show stars Jonathan Roumie as Jesus, Elizabeth Tabish as Mary Magdalene and Shahar Isaac as Simon Peter.

Marina went on to praise The Chosen creator, Dallas Jenkins, who grew up as a budding director in an Evangelical family and dreamed of adapting the life of Christ to the screen.

“What we forget is that faith-based artists have been selling out arenas in the US for forever,” Marina noted.

She also admitted that, while she herself is not “a religious person”, she found it to be a “very interesting story” that has been “very well told”.

The Rest is Entertainment is available via Spotify, Amazon, Apple and other providers.

The Chosen is available on Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming platforms.
