Salford neighbour reveals 2 things that made her fear worst before mum and girl found dead

Send Push

A neighbour of a mum and daughter found dead inside their home has revealed her concerns leading up to the tragedy.

Martina, 40, and her daughter Eleni, 8, were sadly discovered inside a property on South Radford Street in Salford on Monday. Greater Manchester Police said they are treating it as an isolated incident. Heartbroken neighbours have since spoken out about their deaths and said Martina was a doting mother who cared for Eleni, who was "severely disabled".

One local, who has asked to stay anonymous, said she recently noticed two things about the family home that made her fear the worst - that the blinds remained closed all weekend, and that the downstairs light had been left on. According to the neighbour, Martina also looked like she had the "weight of the world on her shoulders" shortly before her death.

“The mother doted on her daughter. It is really sad," she told the Mirror. "I last saw her about a month ago and she looked like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders. She’d had her garden renovated recently but told me she was fed up. She said work that needed doing in the house was getting on her nerves.

The woman continued: “I wondered if something was wrong when I noticed the blinds had been closed from Friday to Sunday. I also noticed the downstairs light had been left on and I said to my husband that I hoped nothing was wrong. But when I saw the police, I feared the worst.”

Another neighbour said: “She was very friendly and chatty. Her daughter always seemed well cared for. She was always cleaning and tidying the house. We used to see her daily, waving her daughter off to school. We are really shocked by it all and it has affected us all because we are such a friendly street.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that all known next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles, of the force, said yesterday: “A woman and young girl were both tragically found dead and we are working hard as a team to establish what happened here this morning.

"Whilst we are not actively looking for anyone else in relation to this investigation, I understand the news of their deaths and the large police and emergency services presence at the address will most likely cause some concern to residents and those further afield in Greater Manchester. I want to reassure them that we believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider threat in the community."

Anyone with information on the incident has been asked to call 101, quoting log 998 of September 23.
