Mrs Brown's Boys is set to return with another Christmas and New Year special this year, and creator Brendan O'Carroll has hinted at a lot of mayhem in the Brown household.
Following his win under the Best Comedy category at the National Television Awards last week, writer and star Brendan had a chat with RadioTimes.com about what fans can expect this year. Despite joking that it hasn't been written yet, it seems like it's going to be as crazy as ever.
He said: "I can foresee Mrs Brown's Christmas will be just as chaotic as ever. Except this year, I think she's going to be happy with her Christmas tree."
While accepting the award at this year's NTAs, where the comedy show beat Ghosts, Not Going Out, Brassic, and The Gentlemen, the actor said: "I want to thank the audience who voted. We make it for you, so thank you very much for responding like you did, [we] appreciate it."
Mrs Brown's Boys' win marked the sixth time the show has won the top Comedy prize at the National Television Awards. But despite the show being a Christmas staple, it has been hit with numerous complaints from viewers who no longer want to see the comedy series on the screens during the Christmas period.
In January, the BBC decided to air another episode of Mrs Brown's Boy as a New Year special. But viewers appeared to have had enough of the chaotic scenes and headed over to social media to complain.
One spectator said at the time: "Just no no no!!! Ratings down, reviews getting worse, just going from bad to worse! Stop funding this mess @BBC #MrsBrownsBoys stop it limping on and on! Give funding to new comedy!!!"
Another said: "2024 and still we have new Mrs f***ing Browns Boys #mrsbrownsboys." While a third added: "14 minutes in and still not laughed. #mrsbrownsboys used to be so funny!!" (sic)
But creator Brendan is fully aware of the backlash his show has received over the years and took it upon himself to address it. He told the Daily Star: "First of all, I’m well aware that comedy is very subjective. What some people like, other people just detest. So I don’t take it too serious."
