A man who stepped up to the microphone for an in-store performance has stunned attendees as they realised who it is.

Vanishing Point Records in Chesterfield hosted the impromptu gig from the famous frontman, who looked unrecognisable in a rare public performance. Those who attended the gig took to social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter/X to share the shock, as many could not believe what they had seen.

Liverpudlian legend Lee Mavers delighted those in attendance at the gig, with The La's frontman playing a selection of songs at the venue. Mavers, 62, wrote the hit song There She Goes in 1988 which cemented the band's legacy.

His performance at Vanishing Point Records marks a rare outing for the frontman, whose band The La's last performed in 2011 at a homecoming show in Liverpool. The record store which hosted the gig took to Instagram and wrote: "Still can't quite believe what I/we witnessed tonight. Lee Mavers and band played in the store and it was an absolute privilege to host them.

"Some sweet spots were hit this evening! Thanks to all that came! Big love and thanks to Lee and the band & @liamwalker music, @groovefarmrecords for bringing the magic." Members of the public who attended the gig were equally as charmed by the sudden performance, with many not believing their eyes.

One user took to Twitter/X and wrote: "Are we seeing this???" Another added: "It’s brilliant to see Lee Mavers back playing live again." Those who attended the gig revealed the show may have been recorded for a vinyl pressing, with an attendee adding: "He played a gig in a record shop last night in chesterfield! Apparently it was recorded straight to vinyl."

Some remain hopeful of a reunion for The La's considering the get togethers happening elsewhere in the UK music scene, with Oasis, Pulp and Blur all reunited over the last three years. One fan wrote: "At time when reunions are happening left right and centre it's great to see Lee Mavers back on stage. Dare to dream we may see more of him."
