Liverpool has never been too far from being linked with Kylian Mbappe over the years. Even after his move to Real Madrid during the summer, the French superstar’s name has continued to be mentioned alongside the Reds.
Mbappe was consistently linked with a transfer to Anfield throughout his time at Paris Saint-Germain. Most Liverpool fans knew it was always going to be highly unlikely, although reports last week suggested the club might have been closer than anyone had realized.
According to L’Equipe, Mbappe agreed terms with Liverpool back in 2022, just months after signing a new deal with PSG. The French club though deemed the Reds’ reported bid of $220m (£168m) too low, wanting double that for his services.
It’s not the first time Liverpool may have come close to securing Mbappe’s signature. Before he even joined PSG, the World Cup winner was said to have held talks with the Reds as he weighed up his options before leaving Monaco in 2017.
In fact, he was even said to have spoken to Liverpool owner John Henry on his private jet. The forward would end up making the move to the French capital, although he would continue to be linked with the Reds amid various fallings-out.
Since then of course, Mbappe has gone on to leave PSG for nothing, completing a long-awaited move to Madrid during the summer. Rather inevitably, it hasn’t taken him too long to get among the goals at the Bernabeu.
The 25-year-old scored on his competitive debut for Madrid as they beat Atalanta 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup. He would have to wait a little while before his next goal for the club though as Los Blancos made a somewhat inauspicious start to the season, drawing two of their first three league games.
Mbappe really announced himself at the start of September as he struck both goals in a 2-0 win over Real Betis, and he made it three goals in two games as his penalty helped Madrid to victory at Real Sociedad on Saturday.
Liverpool will come face-to-face with Mbappe at the end of November as Real Madrid makes the trip to Anfield during the first phase of the revamped Champions League. The Reds will hope he isn’t on form then as they look to turn their recent wretched form against the Spanish giant around.
