Gary Neville mocks Chelsea star over howler in Arsenal clash - 'It's what we do'

Chelsea star Malo Gusto has been told he should be embarrassed after missing an open goal against .

Gusto got beyond his marker to get his head to a brilliant back-post cross from Pedro Neto just 24 minutes into match against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. But the Blues full-back could only send his header over the crossbar from close range, despite having no chance.

It was the best chance for either side in a tight first half, which finished goalless after Kai Havertz’s opener was chalked off by VAR for a close offside call. Gusto is yet to score for in 48 appearances and fellow right-back doesn’t think he will get a better opportunity to break his duck.

“Neto last weekend at Old Trafford didn't do that enough,” he said on co-commentary for Sky Sports. “ couldn't get close to him and he puts an absolutely wonderful cross in, but I do not know how he has missed. Actually, I do: he is a right-back, that is what we do!"

Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter was much more sympathetic during Sky’s half-time analysis. “It’s fantastic wing play here,” he said while watching Neto’s play in the build-up. “He goes once, twice, three times, four times, it’s unbelievable. Credit to Gusto, because that’s what he’s in the team for – to get into the box, to attack the goal and the back line – but as it’s coming across he’s taken his eye off the ball.

“He’s looking at the ground and is hoping it’ll hit his head and go in. He’s not looking at the ball when it’s made contact, it’s a big chance. Martinelli has had to wrestle him, in fairness to him, so that’s probably why he’s taken his eye off it.”

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson then butted in. “You’re doing well for him there,” he said. “It’s a sitter. He’s got to score that chance. As soon as he gets in there, he has to score it.

"It’s an absolute sitter. That’s the kind of chance that tonight you’re laying there in bed thinking ‘How did I miss that?’ It’s hit the top of his head! It’s not even like it’s too high for him.”

Ex-England defender Matt Upson agreed while on commentary for Radio 5 Live: “I thought the chance had gone because Neto took so long but he digs it out. Martinelli switches off at the back post. Looking at the replay, Gusto should be heading that down and it should be 1-0.”
