Former Wimbledon winner marries bloke who asked for selfie on the street

Former Wimbledon champion has married her partner Arthur Borges after the pair famously met when Borges asked the tennis star for a selfie.

Muguruza, who won the and a year later, hung up her racket aged 30 in April of this year after a string of injury woes. However, she managed to find the love of her life just prior to calling it quits as she – and her now husband – formed one of the in recent memory.

Muguruza and Borges, a businessman and model, first met in 2021, while she was competing at in New York. In a scene straight out of a romance, he recognised on the street and wished her luck for the tournament. Sparks instantly flew between the pair. 

Talking of the once in a life-time meeting with her future husband, the Spanish ace explained how the chance encounter came about as she was "bored". She also claimed she knew it was "love at first sight".

“My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk," Muguruza said. "I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, 'Good luck at the US Open.' I was left thinking, 'Wow, he's so handsome’.”

Muguruza even called the couple's whirlwind romance a "total movie" in an interview with the Spanish outlet She added: "It's a total movie. I knew I would marry him even before he asked me. When we met, it was love at first sight and we realized very quickly that we were an ideal couple."

Two years on from their surreal first meeting, Borges popped the question in 2023. After saying yes, Muguruza played on the Hollywood vibe of their relationship as she quoted famous Tom Cruise starring rom-com 'Jerry Maguire' by announcing to her 881,000 followers: "You had me at ‘Hello’".

The couple tied the knot in a ceremony held in Spain over the weekend. In Muguruza's own social media posts she revealed how the glitzy day unfolded, as she received congratulations from WTA Tour peers including Ons Jabeur, Angelique Kerber and Caroline Garcia in the comments.

Her former doubles partner, Carla Suarez Navarro, and coach, Conchita Martinez, were also among the guests in attendance. Muguruza, who plays under a Spanish flag despite being born in Venezuela, says she feels a connection to her husband because he too has an affiliation with two countries, as he was born in Spain but was raised in Finland.

She said: "He's a mix, like me. I'm half-Venezuelan and half-Spanish, so we understand each other. We share that feeling of being citizens of the ."

Muguruza's decision to retire partly came about as she wished to spend more time with Borges. Speaking at the time of leaving the court behind, she said: "I'm leaving tennis because I’m looking forward to being with my loved ones, making a trip without my tennis racquets, probably building a family, getting a dog. I just want to do nothing.”

She also confessed that she took advice from her father on her career. The former Roland Garros champion revealed that she wanted to back away from the sport to simply live her life, she said: "My father always says to me, ‘Garbine, don’t forget to live life. You don’t have to be the queen of Spain – relax’."
