A limited-edition electric guitar owned by Ed Sheeran has been sold for an eyewatering £11,000 at a charity auction.
The Fernandes guitar, adorned with limited edition decals of Pokemon character Pikachu, was expected to fetch between £500 and £1k. Sheeran donated approximately 200 items to the auction, including trainers, jackets, Ipswich Town shirts, and even his cherished musical instruments, all in the name of charity.
He gifted these items to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich, Suffolk. Bishop & Miller Auctioneers in Stowmarket, Suffolk hosted the charity auction on September 26. The star lot of the auction was a Martin LXM acoustic guitar with custom paintwork that Sheeran used at one of his gigs at the Air Canada centre in Toronto, Canada.
After an initial estimate of £200 to £400, it fetched a staggering £3,400. The guitar is decorated with custom paintwork to commemorate the show, and was a gift from Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. Fans also had the chance to bid on Ed's boxed Lego set The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey which raised £220 for the hospice.
The Ed Sheeran Ipswich Town Away shirt, emblazoned with Sheeran and No. 17 on the back, went for £2k, far exceeding its estimated value of £60. Clare Chater, director of income generation at St Elizabeth Hospice, expressed her gratitude: "We'd like to thank Ed for his amazing generosity in donating such a fantastic series of items for the auction."
"It's a truly unique opportunity for all Ed Sheeran fans." Claire Dorman, whose husband James received care from the hospice before his passing at 37, praised the donation as an "incredibly kind gesture". She said: "The hospice have never faltered in their care for my family, during my husband James' illness and after we lost him."
"When James and I first started dating in 2011, we spent many hours driving around in his car listening to Ed's + album, it was our absolute favourite. Our daughter and her friends are all now huge fans too, so it's come full circle."
"Ed's donation to the hospice is an incredibly kind gesture and the funds it will generate are absolutely vital in allowing the hospice to continue their important work."
