The Staircase

Much like the Menendez case, The Staircase has been both a documentary and a true crime drama series.

The 2022 series starred the likes of Colin Farrell and Toni Collette but the docuseries was released first and is arguably the one more worth watching.

It follows the case of Michael Peterson, a novelist who was accused of killing his wife Kathleen in 2001 after she was found at the bottom of a staircase in their home.

Peterson called the emergency services to report his wife fell down the stairs but authorities didn't believe him. Instead they concluded that he had beat his wife to death and charged him with murder.

Unlike many other true crime documentaries you may have seen, camera crews were given exceptional access to Peterson himself, as well as his extended family, defense lawyers and the courtroom as events were actually taking place. For a while, members of Kathleen's family also agreed to take part.

The Netflix series also includes three new episodes in addition to the original French broadcast, which were made from new footage when production was picked back up ten years after Kathleen's death, when there was as shocking development in the case.

This is a must watch for any true crime viewer. It will have you debating what really happened, and examines the role of authorities, the justice system and its true impact on everyone involved.

The Staircase is available to stream on Netflix.

Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez

This 2020 three part docuseries chronicles the truly tragic case of Aaron Hernandez.

Friends, officials, attorneys, journalists and former teammates discuss the rise, fall and fate of the former superstar.

A review for The Boston Globe described the Netflix documentary as "the finest video documentary yet on the Hernandez tragedy, Killer Inside is richly enhanced by archival footage."

Hernandez played for the New England Patriots from 2010 until 2013 when he was charged with the murder of friend and semi-professional American football player Odin Lloyd, who was found dead after being shot at an industrial park one mile from Hernandez's home.

Filmmaker Geno McDermott filed a Freedom of Information Request in order to obtain recordings of Hernandez's phone calls from prison, many of which are included in the documentary.

The examination of Hernandez's crimes, his troubled past and his profession make for compelling viewing.

Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez is available to stream on Netflix.

Clocking in with a runtime of just 40 minutes, Long Shot will take you the least amount of time to get through of the titles on this list.

However, it doesn't mean you won't forget about it any time soon. Long Shot is the unlikely story of how Larry David's HBO comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm helped a murder investigation.

In August 2003, Juan Catalan was arrested for the murder of Martha Puebla, a witness at the hearing of a gangster, who happened to be Juan's brother a few days earlier.

He was arrested and charged after fitting the facial composite a witness described but the documentary examines how the case unfolded in an unexpected way.

If you are looking for a short tale where the little guy wins and justice prevails, start here.

McMillion$

You've heard of the McDonald's Monopoly game but you might not know that during its run between 1989 and 2001, there were no legitimate winners of its big million dollar prizes in the US.

Why? Because a mysterious fraudster known as Uncle Jerry was pulling a $24m scam.

This docuseries interviews the FBI and other authorities who were alerted to shady goings on, as well as bogus winners and those involved in each aspect of the crime.

Special shout out to Special Agent Doug Mathews, who is an instant audience favourite from the first episode. McMilliions is an eye opener of a little known case and while it isn't the grittiest crimes on this list, it is just as fascinating.

McMillion$ is available to stream on Now TV.

Telemarketer$

Telemarketers shares a few qualities with McMillions.

They both have a dollar sign at the end of its title for the S in its marketing, they are both produced by HBO and the other thing they have in common is that it uncovers a fascinating story you probably knew very little about.

Sure, you've heard of the role of telemarketers and probably have a good idea of what they do, but what was really going on at one telemarketing company almost defies belief.

Made by former employees of the firm Civic Development Group, including Sam Lipman-Stern, telemarketers follows them discover that the money they thought was being raised for charities to help police and fire fighters, is lining the pockets of their employers.

Like Special Agent Doug, Telemarketers also has a breakout star in Patrick 'Pat' Pespas who was one of the best telemarketers the company had until he decided they needed to be exposed.

Telemarketer$ is available to stream on Now TV.
